Calling All Cotton Lovers - Which Material Is Best For You??

difference between percale and sateen cotton
It can be confusing when you enter into the Manchester department and are trying to figure which bedding is best suited to you.
Besides looking at the design one also needs to think about how they sleep and what they find more comfortable.... you would be surprised how much the material can affect the quality of your slumber.
At DEIA Living we specialise only in cotton bedding, specifically sateen and percale. These are two different types of cotton weaves used in the production of bed linens.
Each have distinct characteristics that affect their appearance, texture, and feel.
Here are a few pointers to take into consideration next time you're deciding on what bedding to buy:

The Weave

Cotton Sateen is woven using a satin weave, which has a unique construction that creates a smooth and lustrous surface. In this weave, the majority of the threads are on the surface of the fabric, resulting in a slightly shiny and silky appearance.
Percale on the other hand is woven using a plain weave, which is a simple one-over, one-under pattern. This creates a crisp and matte surface with a uniform texture.

Thread Count

Cotton sheets typically have a higher thread count, often ranging from 300 to 800 threads per square inch. The higher thread count contributes to a softer and more luxurious feel.
Percale sheets typically have a lower thread count, typically ranging from 200 to 400 threads per square inch. The lower thread count gives percale a crisper, cooler feel.

Texture and Feel

Cotton Sateen sheets have a smooth, silky feel, and their surface is known for its subtle sheen. They are often described as having a more luxurious and slightly heavier drape.
Percale sheets have a crisp and cool feel with a matte finish. They are lightweight and breathable, making them ideal for those who prefer a cooler sleeping experience.

Durability

Cotton sheets are generally less durable than percale sheets due to the weaving process. The smoother surface and higher thread count can make them more susceptible to pilling and wear over time.
Percale sheets are known for their durability and resistance to pilling. The plain weave construction contributes to their longevity.

Temperature Regulation

Cotton Sateen sheets can be warmer because of their denser weave and smoother surface. They may be better suited for colder seasons or individuals who prefer a slightly warmer sleeping environment.
Percale sheets are breathable and promote better airflow, making them ideal for warm climates or hot sleepers, especially women going through menopause and dealing with dreaded hot flashes and night sweats.
The choice between cotton sateen and percale largely depends on personal preference. Some people prefer the smooth and luxurious feel of sateen, while others prefer the crisp and cool sensation of percale.
It's important to consider your own comfort preferences, climate, and desired aesthetics when choosing between these two cotton weaves for your bedding.
At DEIA Living we offer both sateen and percale. Discover our wide range of luxury cotton bed linen here.
